History of White’s

Members are mostly aristocrats. Today the club has many leisure activities for members ranging from cards to billiards.

White’s may be one of the traditional gentlemen’s clubs that remains relatively unchanged by modern times. The table placed in front of the bow window was reserved for honored members and became a symbol of social prominence. White’s sold hot chocolate and other chocolate concoctions. Many political bets were placed during the Napoleonic Wars. During the reign of King Charles II, chocolate houses were gathering places for London’s elite to debate politics. White’s has always had a reputation for high stakes gambling and unusual wagers. Etiquette is extremely important. At this time, chocolate was a rare luxury that only the wealthy could afford. Bet topics ranged from political predictions to sports. White’s sold tickets to plays performed at the Royal Drury Lane Theatre and the King’s Theatre. Written about in novels and movies, White’s may also be the most famous gentlemen’s club.

Early History of White’s

White’s gentlemen’s club began as a chocolate house that sold chocolate delicacies. In fact, in 1783, the club was the unofficial headquarters of the Tory party.

By 1778, White’s was an established gentlemen’s club. The fashionable St. The bet was lost when the man died.

White’s Club Life

Since its establishment as a gentlemen’s club, White’s has provided a place for members to socialize over cards and parlor games. The membership is still all male. During this time period, White’s moved to 37-38 St. The sponsors write the prospective member’s name in a book and collect about 35 signatures of support for the applicant. A prospective member needs someone to propose his membership and two seconds. James Street, where it remains today. Applicants who already know many current club members have the best chance of success.

Notable members of White’s include Horatio Walpole, Edward VII, Evelyn Waugh, David Niven and Prince Charles.

Some eccentric bets for those with money to burn included Lord Avanley’s £3,000 bet on which of two raindrops would fall on the bottom of the famous bow window pane first. All fashionable gentlemen sought membership in the club. In addition to selling chocolates, Mrs. Beau Brummell held the seat for a number of years.

In the nineteenth century, the establishment was the most exclusive gentlemen’s club for well-born upper class young men. Italian immigrant Francesco Bianco, who changed his name to Francis White, founded the establishment in 1693 at 4 Chesterfield Street and called it Mrs.White’s Chocolate House. Other bets had more serious consequences. According to Anthony Lejeune’s book, Gentleman’s Clubs of London, one member bet £1,000 that a man could live under water for 12 hours. He hired a man to carry out the experiment. The clubhouse had a special bow window on the ground floor. Ticket sales helped balance the costs of the chocolate and maintaining the establishment.

Not much is known about the membership application process. Bets also included social concerns such as gentlemen’s fashions and marriages.. Business remains barred from conversation. Mrs. However, membership was reserved for the wealthiest and most influential members of society who aligned themselves with the Tory party.

White’s Betting Book

During the nineteenth century, club members placed controversial bets in the famous White’s betting book. James area was the most desirable area for a clubhouse. White’s was one of a number of chocolate houses that eventually became a gentlemen’s club.

South Tyneside brickies find there’s mortar life following National Lottery win

A team of brickies from South Tyneside has laid the foundations for a brighter future after scooping more than £69,000 on the National Lottery.

The house-builders, who call themselves the Tyneside Trowels, are celebrating after finally striking it lucky on the Lotto after more than 20 years of trying.

Graham Hartley, team leader of the seven-strong syndicate, admits he thought his mates were having a joke when told they had matched five numbers and the bonus ball in the July 8 draw to win £69,283.

The 45-year-old said: “I got a phone call from one of the lads the next morning.

“I thought he must be calling to ask for some holiday so when he said we’d won the lottery, I thought he was winding me up.

“We’re all over the moon about the news.”

And while the shared sum might not be enough for the men, who work for South Tyneside Homes, to hang up their trowels, it’s a “life-changing” amount, said Graham.

The workmates have yet to decide exactly how they will spend their winnings of nearly £10,000 each but several, including Raymond Martin, 58, Elliot Turnbull, 31, and 33-year-old Lee Nixon have plans for a few immediate treats.

Among them are a holiday to Rhodes, a Gibson Les Paul guitar and, for one of the builders, a kitchen renovation with, presumably, someone else carrying out the work.

Pictured l-r Raymond Martin, Elliot Turnbull, Graham Hartley and Lee Nixon

The syndicate has played the same nine lines online every Wednesday and Saturday for the past two decades – ever since the Lottery started – and Graham added: “We always play the same numbers and have won a few quid here and there but never anything this big before.”

“Three or four of the members have been in since the start but the rest of us have tagged in and out, taking over other people’s lines when they have left the business.”

The win was only discovered the morning after the draw when one member checked the numbers and Graham said it was an “unbelievable” moment.

“We haven’t won enough to quit work but it’s still a life-changing amount,” he said.

“It’ll make life a little more comfortable, mean we can enjoy a nice trip away or splash out a bit on something for our loved one – things like that.

“The peace of mind a little bit of extra cash gives you is fantastic and is an opportunity for us to really live life to the full.”

The lucky seven come from a lucky area too, with South Tyneside postcodes receiving a total of 1,054 individual National Lottery grants which have funded a variety of projects.

St Oswald’s RC Primary School and St Clare’s Hospice, both in South Shields, and Primrose Community Association in Jarrow, have been among the recipients.

Fore! Quickfire Challenge as Prodhomme Shakes Off Bullet | Karen Dalton-Beninato

It’s going to be hard to beat this in the Top Chef Quickfire Challenge. Paul Prudhomme, the New Orleans chef who made blackened redfish a staple of Cajun dining, was grazed by a falling bullet today while he was cooking for the PGA Zurich Classic golf outing. According to WDSU, deputies are speculating that the .22 caliber bullet may have come from a hunter, and the range could be over a mile away..

And warn Padma Lakshmi – the cooking is getting tough down here.

The stray bullet tore his jacket but didn’t pierce his skin, and after getting checked out for a clean bill of health Chef Paul kept right on cooking. Not to mention our upcoming festival season. But if you can’t make it down to the Tennessee Williams Festival, French Quarter Fest or the Jazz and Heritage Festival, at least shake on a little Louisiana Magic Pepper Sauce.

The fact that its chef can take a bullet graze and keep cooking is reason enough to dine at Prudhomme’s K-Paul’s Louisiana Kitchen

Where Are They Now? Startup Battlefield Competitor QuickFire Networks

Talk about a quick exit!

Applications for this year’s Battlefield have formally closed, but there’s still hope! If you’re a startup that’s less than two years old, you can join us in the Startup Alley. On Monday and Tuesday of Disrupt, a wildcard out of the Alley is selected, by audience vote and editor selection, to pitch on-stage as part of the Startup Battlefield.

The hardware is pretty impressive, with each server rack containing a custom motherboard built to accommodate 11 quad-core Intel Core i7 processors working in unison.

You can buy Startup Alley tickets by clicking here. If you are interested in learning more about sponsorship opportunities, please contact our sponsorship team at sponsors@techcrunch.com.

While QuickFire didn’t make it to the Battlefield Finals, things quickly took off for the company after its TechCrunch debut. Shortly after participating in the Startup Battlefield, QuickFire caught the eye of Facebook — which bought QuickFire Networks in January 2015 for an undisclosed amount of money. That technology could be great for Facebook, as competition between Facebook and YouTube heats up over video.

QuickFire Networks launched its QuickFire TV platform in the Startup Battlefield at Disrupt SF 2014. The workload was distributed with a software layer called V-Fabric and the racks were tied together with another layer known as Q-data.. Perhaps best described as a Pied Piper-esque solution for video, QuickFire TV is a custom hardware and software platform that reduces video file sizes and upload times so individuals and companies can get their videos out faster.

Our sponsors help make Disrupt happen. Hope to see you there!

And no, please don’t ask us what their Weissman Score was.

Now, the technology QuickFire built is being incorporated into Facebook’s core platform, which should give Facebook users faster load times and less buffering without a loss in video quality

Stephen Fishbach Blogs: Tony Vlachos Wins : People.com

He repeatedly argued that “the only time I broke my promise to you is if you broke your promise to me first.” LJ and Jefra rolled their eyes in disbelief.

Woo’s Million-Dollar MistakeIndeed, convincing Woo to take him to the final tribal was as great a move as any Tony made. Water 2!

Many Survivor winners let circumstance make their decisions for them, but at every moment, Tony was scheming, choosing the optimal situation that would get him to the end. “I dug myself a hole during the day,” he said at the finale, “and at night dug myself out of the hole.”

What makes Tony’s win even more impressive is the field he was playing against. Thanks to Tony, Survivor: Cagayan will go down as one of the top seasons in the history of the show. Tony outsmarted them all, reading them like they were the morning paper and blindsiding them before they could make their moves against him.

Tony’s win also retroactively justifies many of his controversial decisions that Thursday morning quarterbacks like myself second-guessed. But ultimately, Tony voted out Spencer.

Whether Spencer convinced the jury, or whether they were going to vote for him anyway hardly matters. “I cannot think of another season where more people came to play,” Jeff Probst said. Woo spoke persuasively about his sick mother and his code of ethics. Tony may be the best combined character/player ever. Perhaps he already knew that he could sweet-talk his way into Woo’s good graces?

The Tony pile-on culminated with an emotional jury speech from Trish, who demanded to know if swearing a lie on his dead father’s soul and memory was worth a million dollars to Tony. (Tash inexplicably voted against him.)

“I don’t have any regrets.”

- Colby Donaldson, Survivor: Australia

05/22/2014 AT 11:25 AM EDT

He was both impulsive and strategic.

Tony Vlachos won the million dollars on the finale of Survivor Wednesday, along with the title of Sole Survivor, and most importantly – the final Fishy. The decision was a million-dollar mistake for Woo, who would easily have beaten a loathed Kass.

On Wednesday night, two more roads diverged in the Cagayan woods. Was taking out Jefra instead of Spencer the right move? Apparently it was. .

By Stephen Fishbach

It was a great last play by a phenomenal player. “He blinded his alliance to what was going on around him in the game like a puppet master … And I’ll see all of you for Blood vs. Tony played with the ferocity this game very rarely does see.”

Still, at the final tribal, it seemed bitterness might win the day.

Congratulations on a win incredibly well-deserved. He placed fifth on both Survivor: Micronesia and Survivor: Caramoan. Meanwhile, Tony seemed defensive, unable to really own his game. Tony won the game with eight of the votes. Follow him on Twitter @stephenfishbach. His victory capped off a season he dominated with big moves and flashy gameplay. Erik Reichenbach is a Survivor fan-turned-favorite, a comic book author and artist. Follow him on Twitter @BloodyAmer1can.

Tony Made All the Right MovesSpencer, Tasha, Kass, LJ and Trish were all first-rank Survivors – not the brain-dead zombies of Redemption Island or the math-starved goofballs of One World. He has more theatrical scheming than Russell Hantz, and all the strategic chops of Boston Rob. Tony’s longtime rival made the case that Tony deserved to win for his superb gameplay. Did Tony blindside LJ too soon? He did not.

Stephen Fishbach was the runner-up on Survivor: Tocantins and has been blogging about Survivor strategy for PEOPLE since 2009. Whether he was handing a fake idol clue to Jeremiah, building his spy shack, or turning Sarah against Cliff, at every moment Tony was both advancing his game and having fun. When Spencer lost a heartbreaking immunity at the final four, the young lad made the case that by keeping him in the game, Tony would ensure himself a spot at the final two – either because people would vote out Spencer, or because Spencer himself would take him. “Tony was behind every strategic decision,” Spencer argued.

All seemed lost for Tony until an impassioned jury speech from Spencer.

Tony said it was
